Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications will I achieve?

Outcomes will depend on experience at the point of entry and also how quickly you are able to acquire skill. Please contact us to discuss your individual programme and possible qualifications.

What equipment will I require?

All technical activity equipment will be provided for the duration of your programme, however personal technical clothing, walking boots etc. will need to be provided by yourself. Get in touch if you'd like a copy of the equipment list.

Do I need any previous experience?

Most people deciding to pursue a career in the outdoor market will already have experience of some adventurous activities. It would be expected that students will have a degree of competency in at least one of the disciplines being offered.

What other costs are involved?

All tuition costs are included in the programmes price. However you will be responsible for paying your own memberships and registration fees to the national governing bodies. These fees can be found on their respective websites.

Where will I be accommodated?

Accommodation will vary throughout the course. The centre has dormitory style rooms which are warm and comfortable. Some aspects of the course will be based around expeditions where both wild and site based camping will be used.

Will I get any time off?

Most weekends are free of structured tuition. This is a good opportunity to let your body recover! But also to work on practicing some of the skills that you will have been taught to help with the consolidation process.

Can I use equipment and facilities in my time off?

There are some rules, but equipment and facilities will be available for you to use during your programme.

Will this training programme help me get a job?

Yes! You will be more experienced, more qualified, and will have a wider understanding of how outdoor centres work and what instructors are expected to do. We will also make you aware of what opportunities exist for employment, both in the next few years and later if you choose to continue a career in the outdoor industry. There is a need every year for new instructors in the outdoors. Centres and other employers often recruit from instructor training programmes, and from recommendation, but of course no absolute guarantee can be made.
