The Centre
Skern Lodge has been using the outdoors for adventure activities and people development since 1976.
It is an independent organisation committed to the highest standards in all aspects of the business. Situated on the edge of Appledore in North Devon in 22 acres of its own grounds with the tidal waters of the estuary on the doorstep.
Based on the Atlantic coast, it is in a perfect position for practitioners of outdoor pursuits. There are quality kayaking locations nearby, with the whole of the north coast for incredible sea paddling, as well as rivers inland such as the Lyn, Torridge, Dart, Exe and Barle all within a short drive.
We are also within easy reach of Baggy Point and the other sea cliffs of the north coast. This makes it an ideal base for a range of climbing and hill walking experiences.
The local surf beach is only a three-minute drive away, down in the nearby village of Westward Ho! Swells are consistent through the year but get particularly good through the autumn and winter months as more unsettled weather systems pass through the Atlantic ocean. Skern Lodge provides activity and development programmes for a wide range of clients of all ages - schools, colleges, families, companies, special needs etc. Your stay at Skern Lodge will be an opportunity to see how instructors and the staff team work to plan and deliver this wide range of programmes to a high standard. Our professional and highly qualified staff are not only first rate instructors, but are also committed outdoor enthusiasts with far reaching experience of climbing and mountaineering in locations around the world. This expertise, together with our great facilities, will ensure you receive the best training available. The programme will be managed by Glyn Brackenbury. Glyn has been running coach education and development programmes for over 10 years. He is responsible for the recruitment and management of the instructional staff at the centre, so is ideally placed to advise on industry requirements.
